Some items discussed at the meeting held on 17th February
2010:
Land Registry – The Parish Council was pleased to agree the revised map
relating to the Village Hall. This
should allow our solicitors to close the file.
Church Fete on 26th June.
The Parish Council was pleased to give permission for use of the
Recreation Ground on that day.
Planning application(s) granted by
SCDC:
S/1204/09/O – Land South of Genome Campus – Erection of
Buildings for Research and Development together with Ancillary Facilities and
Infrastructure and associated work – BNP Paribus Real Estate (for The Wellcome
Trust).
Tim Pavelin declared an interest in the revised proposed
plans from JAP Architects.
Revised proposed planning application from JAP Architects –
The Old Chapel site, Frogge Street.
The Councillors discussed the revised proposed plans and were delighted
to see the house set back from the road, but felt it could be set back further
due to the impact of the structure so close to the road, and it would also
allow more car parking/turning facilities.
With regard to the footpath/verge it was the Councillor’s preference
that CCC Highways Department should adopt this. The Councillors would like to see the new enclosure wall as a
flint wall (not brick) as was previously on this site. The Council would welcome any further
queries the Architects may have.
Burial Fees 2010 – The Table of Fees agreed at the Parish Council meeting on
18th February 2009 had been circulated and was discussed. It was agreed to make increases in the fees
for the coming year. A copy can be
obtained from the Clerk on request.
Flooding in the parish continues to give concern and we are pressing for
progress on: Land adj. to Stump Cross, drain
at top of Mill Lane, Abbey Street opposite Methodist Chapel and Abbey Street/Butcher’s
Hill.
Footpath 5 (Tin Alley) has been improved near the brook/kissing gate.
Other items of interest:
The Gardens of Easton Lodge – Visit and see the Snowdrops on
Sundays February 28th and 7th and 14th March
12 noon – 4.00 p.m. Refreshments will
be available. For further information

NEWS FROM THE RECTORY
My first month has gone in a flash. I’ve hopped on to my bike to ride around the
villages to the different churches and to visit folk, and though it’s been
distinctly chilly and wet at times there have been some amazing compensations.
I’ve seen the beginnings of spring just starting here and there in snowdrops
and the aconites. I’ve watched an egret nonchalantly fishing in the river by
the Ickleton road - and had a surprise encounter at
night-time with a badger, the first I have ever seen.
Meanwhile we’re experiencing Lent and looking towards the
events of Holy Week and Easter. I look at the changeable weather and think
about previous generations living the ‘hungry gap’ between the last of the
winter provisions and the first produce of spring. Then I think about the new life promised everywhere, in buds on
the trees, and in the spikes of narcissi on the banks of Ickleton
churchyard. I never think Lent is
gloomy. It’s full of anticipation and
promise, waiting for change. It helps
us to focus on what we would really like to be different about our lives. Its
discipline can, with God’s help, transform – not just ‘giving up’ things but
deciding to make positive changes.
In the churches we will be using the time to think about how
we pray and to try to make our prayer deeper and more focussed. That’s not introspection,
it’s caring for our neighbour in the prayers we offer for other people, locally
and in the world. It brings together our love and the love of God. That
powerful combination makes changes, sometimes very subtle but always
significant. It’s not a quick fix. It
is a discipline of care. We will
remember anyone who asks for it in our prayers, in absolute confidence. There are cards in the church which you can
use to write what you would like us to remember, and they will form part of the
basis of our prayer throughout the month.
On a different topic: everyone is extremely welcome to our
Mothering Sunday service on 14th March at 11.00 a.m. in Ickleton
church. We will be celebrating ‘the
woman who laughed’ –Abraham’s wife Sarah, who disbelieved the angel who said
she would conceive at ninety years old.
Please come to lunch afterwards! Rev Dr Jessica Martin

MOTHERING SUNDAY
ALL-AGE SERVICE - The Women who laughed at God
So who was the woman in the Bible who laughed at God? And
what was so funny? Come to this year‘s Mothering Sunday Service on March 14th
and find out. Everyone is very welcome. We’ll be thinking about faith and
trust and how God doesn’t always do things in the way we would expect or hope
for. Just now, sleet is falling outside at the start of yet another cold snap
and I’m wondering what we shall find to make the Mother’s Day posies from this
year, but maybe there will be a surprise in store there too - we can always
hope! As in previous years, the service will be followed by a baked potato
lunch in the Village Hall. This is free, but we would appreciate knowing
numbers in advance so look out for a sign up sheet in church or let Mandy
Jeffery or Rosie McKillen know if you’d like to come.
SAFARI SUPPER
Back by popular demand - this is advance notice that the
date for this year's wandering supper around the village will be Saturday 12th
June. Please put the date in your diary now - especially if you missed out on
the fun last year. Further details will follow in next month's ICENE. Mandy
Jeffery
LENT GROUPS AND
LENT LUNCHES
There will be Lent groups in the three parishes on
Wednesdays, 10.30 a.m.-12.00 noon, in Duxford (4, Kintbury), followed by lunch
in the URC, beginning Wednesday 24th February.
There will also be an evening group on Thursdays, 8.00-9.30 p.m.
in Ickleton, initially (Shepherd’s Cottage, Grange Road), beginning Thursday 25th
February.
CHURCH
FETE: Saturday 26th June
The Ickleton Church fete is
slightly earlier this year – it doesn’t clash with Wimbledon finals or the
World Cup - which hopefully means we’ll see a good turn-out for the fun packed
event we have planned. Don’t worry, we’ll still have all the favourite stalls,
but we’ll also be adding some new ones. There will be more activities outside
with regular free displays of different kinds. And then there’s the village
photo of course...!
We’re really keen to make this a
good day out for everyone! If you have any ideas or want to volunteer, please
talk to someone on the fete committee: Keena McKillen, Tori McKillen, John and
Christina Taylor or Anne-Marie Hoare. Keena McKillen (01223 832785

ICKLETON SOCIAL
CLUB
The 2009 A.G.M. of the Ickleton Social Club was held on
Friday 29th January.
Apart from the Chairman’s annual report, re-election of the
committee and officers and the treasurer’s report, the main topic of discussion
was that the club needed to raise its profile in Ickleton and the surrounding
villages, to encourage better attendance throughout the year and more support
for the various activities organised.
The Club premises are located on the corner of Church Street
and Mill Lane, and offer a fully stocked and cosy bar which opens at 8.00 p.m.
Monday to Saturday and 9.00 p.m. on Sunday, with beer from £1.50p a pint, and
wine and spirits from £1.10p a measure.
The annual membership is £10.00 (£5.00 for Senior Citizens) and is
restricted to the over 18s unless accompanied by an adult club member.
The Club also has a snooker room with two full size tables,
two dart boards and a large function room which is available for hire from
£25.00 per booking for private functions and children’s parties etc.
A bingo evening is held every Monday and quizzes, darts
competitions and various seasonal events are held during the year.
The next ‘Quiz Night’ will be held at 9.15 p.m. on Saturday
20th March. Please feel free to come along and join in.
We look forward to welcoming both new and old members during
2010.

Once more the accomplished actress Louise Reed held her
audience spellbound with her description of the life of the wives and
concubines who lived behind ‘Harem Walls’. Despite the pampering and cosseting
our W I. ladies felt it was not the life for them, but very much enjoyed
Louise’s tales of Arabian Nights!
The next meeting will be the A.G.M on March 17th. New Committee members are needed to replace
four retiring members.

ARE YOU A YUMMY MUMMY?
Yummy
Mummy is a fundraising campaign run by the Children’s Cancer Charity, see yummymummy.org.uk
for more information. For the past 4 years mums across the UK have been
raising money to help child cancer sufferers by taking part in Yummy Mummy week. This
year it runs from 6-14th March.
I am hosting a charity event for Yummy Mummy which is a Chair Dance Class
(burlesque style/Moulin Rouge), where you can prove you are a Yummy
Mummy! This will take place at Ickleton Village Hall from 6.30 until
7.45 p.m. on Monday, 8th March.
I ran this class a few weeks ago; it really is keep fit with
a difference and we certainly had a giggle! Come along wearing keep
fit gear, trainers and something pink. Any donation welcome,
proceeds go to the Children’s Cancer Charity.
Please book your chair.

GT. CHESTERFORD &
DISTRICT GARDENING SOCIETY
We had an unfortunate start to 2010 as our guest speaker let
us down at the last minute. We had to
improvise the evening with refreshments and question time.
Two outings are being arranged - one to Peter Beales’
Nursery in Attleborough, and the other to Madingley Hall Gardens, Cambridge. More
details later.
The next meeting will be on March 3rd when we
will enjoy a mind boggling quiz, with cheese and wine at a charge of £2. Visitors
welcome. Cynthia

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS
We are sorry this is so late; we didn’t get round to taking
the money to the bank until 23rd January. By that time it was too
late for February ‘Icene’.
We would like to thank everyone that came to see the lights
and gave so generously. Two cheques for £115 each have been sent to The Breast
Cancer ward and The Teenage Cancer ward.
Thank you everyone. Carol
and Barry Turton
NEWS FROM SAWSTON MEDICAL PRACTICE Our new ‘Rapid Access Team’ has, at the time of
writing, been operational for just over a week. This team, comprising doctors and senior nurses, speak to all
patients requesting a same day appointment.
This can result in an appointment to see a member of the ‘Rapid Access
Team’, telephone advice, a prescription or an appointment to see a clinician in
a few days’ time if the problem is not medically urgent. During the first week
of February this team dealt with 525 telephone calls, out of these calls 249
patients were seen on the same day that they called the practice. We have received many positive comments
about the introduction of this service and are keen to further improve this
service where possible to ensure that it meets the needs of both our patients
and clinicians. This is only a part of the work carried out at the Medical
Practice as during the week 1932 patients were either seen at the practice, had
a home visit or received telephone advice – this amount of appointments equates
to 1 in 7 of our practice population being seen or given advice on a weekly
basis. Of those seen at the practice
659 were seen on time or before their appointment time. The average waiting time for those seen a
little after their allotted appointment time was 7.8 minutes.

Unbelievably 83 patients did not attend for their booked
appointment – this is the equivalent of 6 doctor’s sessions in a week - with the amount of requests for appointments
it is really important that if you cannot attend a booked appointment you let
us know so that we can release the appointment for another patient. Our next planned change will be the
introduction of a long-term medical conditions clinic. Patients with one or more long-term medical
conditions (for example patients with both asthma and high blood pressure) will
be called in for a complete review of all their medical conditions at one
appointment. We are confident that this
will further improve the services we offer and we will send out more
information when this clinic is ready to start. We ask also that you only order
medication that is actually needed. We
continually receive returned medications that we have to destroy as for various
reasons we are not allowed to reuse it even if the packets have not even been
opened. In one day alone we received
returned medication that had a value of £429.00. If you are unsure about the need to continue with your repeat
medications please contact the practice for advice. Money saved from unnecessary repeat medications can then be used
to provide other services. We are constantly trying to improve the quality and
range of services we offer our patients.
To help us, please only ask for a same day appointment if your problem
is medically urgent. For all routine
appointments or to see a named doctor or nurse please book your appointment in
advance – this can be done up to 4 weeks ahead. If you have any suggestions or comments about the range of
services we offer please let either me or Gerard Newnham know. Jenny

HAZEL IS RUNNING IN
THE LONDON MARATHON!
Many of you have seen me out running despite the snow and
freezing conditions. After completing
my first half marathon in November I have now set my sights higher and on 25th
April I will be running the London Marathon and raising funds for Tommy’s.
Tommy’s is a charity that funds scientific research ensuring
more babies are born healthy. In the
UK, one in four women will lose a baby as a result of miscarriage, stillbirth
and premature birth. Tommy’s believes this level of heartache is
unacceptable. Please help me to raise
funds to support Tommy’s medical research.
Your support will bring them closer to the goal of halving the number of
tiny lives lost during pregnancy and birth, and help couples experience the joy
of becoming parents to a healthy child.
You can find out more about Tommy’s charity and support me
through sponsorship by going to:
www.tommys.org/hazel.
With many thanks. Hazel Turton
FOOD WASTE
We all love food, but sometimes we throw away food waste;
this may be from meal preparations or leftovers. All food waste can be placed
in the green bin, including: plate scrapings, meat and fish (uncooked and
cooked), fruit and vegetables.
It is important that all food waste makes its way into the
green bin rather than the black bin.
When food waste is placed into the black bin it ends up in a landfill
site where it rots and produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Food waste placed in the green bin is
composted and turned into nutrient rich soil improver.
Some people do not want to place food waste straight into
the green bin and prefer to place it in a bag or liner. In the past there has been confusion
regarding the type of bag that can be used for food waste.
Residents with the best of intentions have purchased
cornstarch/potato starch liners that state that they are biodegradable and
'compatible with local authority composting schemes'. However, corn
starch/potato starch liners do not break down during the composting
process and cause contamination. We can only accept paper liners in the green
bin as they do break down.
In response to residents asking which type
of liner can be used and where they can buy them, we have teamed up
with Healthy Planet Bags. Paper liners
can now be purchased from: Costcutter Express in Ickleton or www.southcambscaddyliners.co.uk
